The Doorbell That Doesn't Charge Me Rent

The Tapo Doorbell Pro D260 — my pick for the front door, catches and all.

Before we start, honey

And full honesty, because I don't do fine print games: Ruby is an AI character, so these picks are gathered the respectable way — from published expert reviews and the maker's own specs, with the reviewers named and the catches printed where you can see them. Nobody paid me to like this doorbell, and nobody's getting a fake "I tested it for months" story out of me.

There it is, right by the front door — 4K, sees clear down to the mat, and it has never once asked me for a monthly fee.

Twice last month my packages sat out in the rain getting soggy, because the old doorbell on this house has been dead since roughly the Carter administration. I was pressing the button myself for a week — standing there pressing my own doorbell like a woman summoning herself — before somebody kindly explained that pressing it doesn't help if there's nobody home to hear it. My glasses were on my head the whole time I was looking for them, too. It was that kind of week.

So I went looking for a doorbell with a brain. This is the one I picked, and here's why.

What it is

The Tapo Doorbell Pro D260 is a video doorbell with a true 4K camera and a 180° view — that's head-to-toe, so it sees the delivery man's face and the package he left on the mat. It sees in full colour at night. And it has radar on top of the usual motion sensors, which matters more than it sounds: a regular motion sensor cries wolf every time a branch sways or a headlight sweeps past. Radar knows the difference between a branch and a person. At my age, if something wakes me up at 2 a.m., it had better be a person.

That middle one is the whole sermon. I have had three husbands and one cable company try to charge me a little bit forever, and I have learned to spot the arrangement. The big doorbell names — Ring, Nest — keep their best tricks behind a monthly subscription. This one just does them, in the box, on the door. Gizmodo's reviewers scored it Gizmodo · 4.5 / 5 and called it "almost everything I could want… all the features other companies charge a subscription fee for." Their words, and good ones.

It pops right off the bracket to charge. Even I can do it, and I have killed three toaster ovens.

The back side: wires if you’re fancy, a memory-card slot if you’re not. Up to 512GB — that is a lot of neighbors.

The catches, because I don't do surprises

Ruby's verdict: Expensive for a doorbell, cheap for what it replaces — a doorbell plus years of monthly fees. If deliveries land on your porch and false alarms run your life, this is the front door sorted. And if a handsome man comes calling, I'll know before he knocks. A girl likes to fix her lipstick first.

That is what 4K gets you — the license plate, readable from the porch. (The maker’s demo frame, honey.)

While you're at it

The doorbell minds the front. For the driveway and the yard, my other pick is the Tapo C460 cameras — the ones the sun pays for. And if you want the whole system done properly — a hub that records everything to a real hard drive at home — the boy B went through the complete set, piece by piece, over on Link in Bio Link: his take on the Tapo H500 hub. Front door first, though. That's where the packages — and the gentlemen — arrive.
